The objective of Avenue Art Days is to harness some of the untapped creative abilities of the Wichita emerging young designers and artists and involve them in the creation and improvement of the aesthetic components of our increasingly urbane Douglas Avenue thoroughfare. From light poles to park benches, crosswalks to trashcans, to murals on private property… We are bringing color, and our voice to the streets of the Douglas Design District.
Avenue Art Days began in Fall 2015, along Douglas from Washington to Hydraulic. Over 100 volunteers and artists showed up and in one weekend we cleaned and painted every light pole and installed seven street murals. As a result we gained citywide attention featured in local newspaper, TV news, and public radio. The event itself and the coverage following has and will continue to address the perception issue that has long been a challenge for our city.
Since fall of 2015, the Douglas Design District has hosted two Avenue Art Days events yielding 40 art installations at businesses in the District. We’ve seen tons of support from the Wichita community and the City, working with hundreds of volunteers to make the event a great success!
