As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week for the state of Kansas, the National Weather Service is offering a storm spotter training class Tuesday night in Wichita.

During a City Council Workshop Tuesday, Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer thanked the city maintenance crew that cleared snow from streets.

"Through this entire time frame, through both of the snows, we have to say hats off to our guys that were out there working the streets," said Brewer.

Brewer said the crew worked through the first storm and then immediately prepared for the next one to come in.

"They did an outstanding job in getting our streets all taken care of and getting them all cleaned up." said Brewer.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Wichita and the surrounding areas beginning at midnight Monday until at least noon Tuesday.

City officials are now saying that they have replenished the supply of sand and salt to treat the roads. However, they are still urging residents to stay home, if possible.

Joe Pajor with the Public Works and Utilities department says they will plow the roads throughout the duration of the storm, but will keep the majority of the salt and sand to treat the roads at the storm's end.

The conservation approach will likely make roads slicker and more difficult to navigate.

The storm they named "Q" made its across the state, dumping 14.2 inches of snow in Wichita, making it the second worst snow storm in the city’s recorded history.
