Into It: Pigments

Given the infinite access we’re afforded to color, it’s hard to imagine the importance its been given throughout history and the passion that has gone into its hunt.

In the pursuit of vivid color, each region of the world tapped its own resources. In the Middle East, the semi-precious stone Lapis lazuli yielded a bright blue pigment, and in China, the deep red-orange pigment vermilion was derived from a common ore of mercury.

Court Staffer Fired For Tweets Sent During Kline Hearing

A court staffer has been fired after tweeting disparaging comments during an ethics hearing at the Kansas Supreme Court.

The staffer sent the tweets last week during a hearing over conduct by former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline.

National Group To Protest Kobach Policies

Opponents of immigration policies favored by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach are calling for his resignation.

A group called the DREAM Act Coalition expects up to 75 people from around the country to join with others at an anti-Kobach rally Tuesday at a Topeka state office building.

Spirit Aerosystems CEO To Retire In 2013

Wichita aircraft company Spirit AeroSystems Monday announced that President and CEO Jeffrey Turner will retire in early 2013.

In a press release, Turner said he announced his plan to retire to “ensure adequate time to find a suitable replacement, and allow for an effective handover of duties."

He will continue to serve as President and CEO until his successor takes office.

Judge: No Bond For KS Doctor In Abortion Case

A Kansas doctor won't have to post a bond while appealing the revocation of her medical license over referrals of patients to the late Dr. George Tiller for late-term abortions.

The State Board of Healing Arts wanted to require Dr. Ann Kristin Neuhaus to post a bond of nearly $93,000 as she pursues a lawsuit in hopes of regaining her license. Shawnee County District Judge Franklin Theis on Friday rejected the board's request.

Childhood Poverty Task Force to Meet

A task force appointed to look for ways to reduce child poverty will meet for the first time Monday in Topeka. Governor Sam Brownback created the task force to look for ways the state can help reduce the number of Kansas kids living in poverty.

October Kansas Jobless Rate Due Monday

The Kansas Department of Labor is preparing to release a fresh look at the state's economy.

The agency says its report on October's unemployment rate will be announced Monday. The state's jobless rate has been on the way down recently, falling to 5.9 percent in September from 6.2 percent in August and 6.7 percent in September 2011.
