Carla Eckels

Assistant News Director, Music Host

Carla Eckels has been an award-winning announcer/news producer for KMUW 89.1FM, Wichita Public Radio for 15 years. Carla also produces a R&B and gospel show Soulsations, Sunday nights at 6 on KMUW.  She also hosts Joyful Sounds, a Sunday morning gospel radio show on the internet Grown Folk Jamz.  Prior to KMUW, she was the local host for NPR’s Morning Edition at WYSO public radio in Yellow Springs, Ohio and co-hosted a nationally syndicated Gospel Countdown Radio show in Cincinnati. 

Carla has reported on national news stories such as the BTK serial killer case, Roeder trial, Greensburg tornadoes and the 1958 Dockum Drug Store sit-in for NPR.  The Dockum feature was the number one listened to story on KMUW’s website in 2007.

She’s the recipient of an Edward R. Murrow regional award for her reporting on Alzheimer’s. Carla has annually emceed the Wichita River Festival and Black Arts Festival gospel music segments. She was the emcee for the 2010, 2011 A Tribute to Trail Blazers Gala for the Kansas African American Museum and the 2011 NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet.

From 2004 to 2007, Carla hosted the number one gospel radio show on KSJM 107.9 JAMZ. She is the recipient of the Best Disc Jockey award voted on by subscribers of The Community Voice Newspaper.

Carla is a graduate of Wichita State University with a degree in communications. Her greatest joy is her family. She is married to Wichita and WSU Football Hall-of-Famer, Rev. Reuben Eckels and they are co-founders of New Day Christian Church. They have two children. Carla serves at New Day along side her husband, Reuben and co-pastor Rev., Dr. Cynthia Wolford.

Kansans Continue Push For Medicaid Expansion

85,000 uninsured Kansans have found themselves in the so-called Medicaid gap, unable to receive federal or state funding to help cover healthcare costs. Governor Brownback has deferred the issue to state lawmakers. Many local residents spoke about the issue at a legislative forum.

Sedgwick County Lawmakers Host Public Forum To Recieve Community Input

Oletha Faust-Goudeau is a Democratic member of the Kansas Senate, representing the 29th District.

Sedgwick County lawmakers will hold a public forum Wednesday night in downtown Wichita. It’s an opportunity for residents to voice concerns and request action from the South Central Legislative Delegation.

State Senator Oletha Faust-Goudeau, who represents District 29 in Wichita is chair of the delegation. She says the forum will include discussion on the state budget, jobs, education, guns, taxes and a focus on healthcare.

Wichita Community Kwanzaa Celebration

The basic instructional CD, Kwanzaa, What it is and How to Celebrate it by Tasleem Muqtasid is available at Wichita’s Roseline’s International Enterprise and the Kansas African American Museum.

The 10th annual Kwanzaa: Unity Celebration will be held on December 26 in north Wichita. Participants will celebrate family, community and culture.

Kwanzaa, which means first fruit in Swahili, is a week-long observance that highlights African and African-American heritage and culture. Founded in the 1960’s, Kwanzaa is celebrated annually from December 26 through January 1.

Storyteller Tasleem Mutasid says everyone can learn at the community enrichment event.

Mayor Carl Brewer Proclaims Karla Burns Week

Wichitan, Broadway Star Karla Burns receives a proclamation from Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer for her acclaimed work in the performing arts.

Broadway star and Wichita native Karla Burns received a proclamation Tuesday during a Wichita City Council meeting.  Mayor Carl Brewer declared December the 17 through the 24 as Karla Burns Week.

Burns is a 1978 graduate of Wichita State University.

She is known for her powerful mezzo-soprano voice which won her an Olivier Award in London and a Tony nomination for her portrayal  of "Queenie" in the revival of Show Boat on Broadway.
