Fletcher Powell

Production Manager and All Things Considered Host

If Fletcher Powell could be someone else, he’d be Errol Morris or Ira Glass. Except younger and better looking.

Since he can’t, he’ll be Fletcher Powell, KMUW Production Manager and host of All Things Considered. Fletcher came to KMUW in 2009 after five years of working in the stock market (don’t ask). He feels like this line of work fits him a little better than that one did.

Fletcher has a BA in Psychology from the University of Kansas and an MA in Communication from Wichita State University. He’s lived in Wichita most of his life, aside from some brief stops in Iowa and Ohio. He likes baseball, guinea pigs, and the Oxford comma.

For a lot of people, “summer movie” means action, superheroes, things blowing up, buildings falling down.

I like that stuff, too. I won’t lie about that.

There’s another kind though. And I’ll admit that these movies play to a far smaller audience than those big-budget thrill-fests. But for me, they’re the kind of movies that really capture something about summer. The heat, the sort of aimlessness some of us feel without the constraints of school, and the real rhythms of life.

In 1977, movie director William Friedkin was hot off the success of 1971's Oscar-winning The French Connection and 1973's The Exorcist, a massive commercial hit that also pulled in 10 Oscar nominations of its own.

“The original assignment on this was from the Wichita Art Museum to do a color party, this year’s theme is midnight. The assignment is to create something that communicates the passage of time with midnight being the central theme. They want it to feel uncomfortable, the malleability of time, they wanted to show motif and repetition and they wanted us to create something that involved the viewer very much.“
