Lu Anne Stephens

Director of Programming and Operations, Music Host

Lu Anne has held many positions at KMUW, including local Morning Edition host and reporter/editor. In addition to her current duties as Program Director, Lu Anne produces KMUW’s “New Settler’s Radio Hour”  and countless special productions. After studying Music Performance and Journalism at Pittsburg State University, Lu completed her degree at Wichita State University in 1995. She has won several awards for journalistic excellence since she has been at KMUW.

What's On: April 20

Listen for folk and Americana musician Slaid Cleaves (based in Austin, TX), recorded at the Old Settlers Inn. Slaid performs both as a solo acoustic act and with other musicians. He first gained notice in 1992 when he won the Kerrville Folk Festival "New Folk" competition. He hit the Americana charts in 2000 with his album and song "Broke Down."

Listen for Krista Detor at the Old Settlers Inn. Krista is a singer-songwriter who has performed at venues around the world – including several times at the Old Settlers Inn.  She's been writing music for film, TV and stage. She was an artist-in-residence in India.  With all that, she still manages to tour a bit.  As usual, the audience brings out the best in a singer-songwriter.

New Settlers features Groovelily, an award-winning trio fusing acoustic, pop, classical and jazz, recorded at the Old Settlers Inn. Groovelily’s sound also comes from their blended vocals and instrumentation – a six-string electric violin, keyboards and percussion. They're funny and eclectic and so very talented.

Listen for guitarist and singer/songwriter Tommy Emmanuel before a live audience at Wichita’s Orpheum Theater. The Australian-born showman first played in this area at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield several years ago. He started as an unknown but by the second day his shows were crowded with new fans.  Tune in to see what all the excitement is about!

What's On: March 2

Listen for music from the California Guitar Trio performance at the Orpheum in Wichita. The three guitarists met in a guitar craft course focusing on the New Standard Tuning, which they still use today. If you’re wondering what the New Standard Tuning is and why it matters, here’s a brief description – the guitar is tuned in fifths rather than fourths which makes the overall range wider. The guitar can create lower and higher sounds. Like most alternate tunings, it opens the door to new music, arrangements, new sounds. The California Guitar Trio plays original works, arrangements of rock, classical and jazz.

What's On: February 23

Listen for music from Zoe Lewis and her Rubber Band performing at the Old Settlers Inn.  Zoe is an English folk musician from Brighton who now lives in Massachusetts. She plays everything from traditional folk tunes to ballads to world beat to vaudeville.  And she sings a song about pie – does it get any better? Her instruments include the tin whistle, guitar, piano, harmonica, ukulele, accordion, human trumpet and sometimes spoons. Her band is made up of some of the best musicians working today.
