Lu Anne Stephens

Director of Programming and Operations, Music Host

Lu Anne has held many positions at KMUW, including local Morning Edition host and reporter/editor. In addition to her current duties as Program Director, Lu Anne produces KMUW’s “New Settler’s Radio Hour”  and countless special productions. After studying Music Performance and Journalism at Pittsburg State University, Lu completed her degree at Wichita State University in 1995. She has won several awards for journalistic excellence since she has been at KMUW.

What's On: February 23

Listen for music from Zoe Lewis and her Rubber Band performing at the Old Settlers Inn.  Zoe is an English folk musician from Brighton who now lives in Massachusetts. She plays everything from traditional folk tunes to ballads to world beat to vaudeville. And she sings a song about pie – does it get any better? Her instruments include the tin whistle, guitar, piano, harmonica, ukulele, accordion, human trumpet and sometimes spoons. Her band is made up of some of the best musicians working today.

What's On: February 16

All the concerts featured on New Settlers have been great performances but some stand out as being amazing experiences for the performer and audience alike. We have another "Best of the Best" this week.

Chuck Pyle, the “Zen Cowboy of Colorado” from his concert at the Old Settlers Inn. Chuck is great performer and a wonderful blend of folksy and intellectual, dry humor and poetry, songs that make you laugh, songs that make you think, songs that make you cry.

Everyone loves a love song, right? But no one more than singer/songwriters, who will write about love in any conceivable form. This Saturday, New Settlers celebrates Valentine’s Day, with tunes about shiny new lovers and broken hearts, the wishful, the wistful and even the vengeful. Performers include Anne Hills, Pierce Pettis, Cheryl Wheeler, Brooks Williams, Tom Prasada-Rao, recorded at the Old Settlers Inn and other venues in and around Wichita.

What's On: February 2

Listen for R&B favorite Kelley Hunt and her band from their performance at the Old Settlers Inn. Kelley was born and raised in Kansas and continues to live in Lawrence though she spends a lot of her time touring the U.S. and the world. Kelley's distinctive "boogie woogie" piano style can be traced to her beloved early piano teacher (the subject of "Queen of the 88's").

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has been performing since the 60s. Through the years they've played folk, country-rock and pop. They've had popular radio hits and well-known (though rarely broadcast) traditional tunes. We recorded them at the Cotillion in Wichita.

Fun, poetic, gritty, and wonderful. Listen for Greg Brown in concert at the Old Settlers Inn. Greg has recorded more than two dozen albums, is the founder of Red House Records and has received several folkie-and-indie type awards. His tunes have been covered by Willie Nelson, Carlos Santana, Ani DiFranco, Shawn Colvin and countless others. Like most singer-songwriters, he’s best when playing live in a small setting. Tune in and hear one of his best performances.

Tom Kimmel is the quintessential singer/songwriter. His compositions have been recorded by dozens of musicians including Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Linda Ronstadt, Joe Cocker and Randy Travis… so many more. Tom is also a popular performer in alt-acoustic and folk circles, whether a solo act, performing with friends or as part of the Sherpas (with Tom Prasada-Rao and Michael Lille.) He's been at the Old Settlers Inn many, many times since the series started in the mid-90s. Always an audience-favorite in any configuration.
