Tonight on the Night Train – May featured artist Carla Bley, a birthday salute to one of the great singers in jazz – Betty Carter, previews of jazz concerts in the coming week, and new music from trumpeters Ray Vega & Thomas Marriott, guitarist Horace Bray, and the Great American Music Ensemble.

Tuesday 5.17.16

Night Train highlights new music from 2015 NEA Jazz Masters George Coleman, Charles Lloyd, and May featured artist Carla Bley. Plus music from 2016 NEA Jazz Master Gary Burton, and a birthday salute to alto saxophonist and 2001 NEA Jazz Master Jackie McLean.

Night Train highlights jazz legends and classic recordings tonight – including music from Ella Fitzgerald, Bill Evans, John Coltrane (with Thelonious Monk and from A Love Supreme) and Erroll Garner’s classic Concert by the Sea. Plus acclaimed bassist Ron Carter, 2016 NEA Jazz Master Gary Burton (performing music of May featured artist Carla Bley), and the Montgomery Brothers (Wes, Buddy, and Monk).

Thursday 5.19.16

Tonight on the Night Train – birthday celebrations for bassist Kyle Eastwood (Clint’s son), pianist and producer Allen Farnham, and saxophonist Sonny Fortune; more from May featured artist Carla Bley; a selection from one of the 2016 Doris Duke Artist Award winners – pianist Fred Hersch; and new music from Herlin Riley and Mike Freeman Zonavibe.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
