The race for Wichita’s next mayor was narrowed in Tuesday night’s primary elections. The ballot also featured primary races for two Wichita City Council seats.
The field of 10 mayoral candidates included a banker, business owners and politicians. In the end, it went to the two who raised the most money.
Jeff Longwell, a current Wichita City Council member, will face Sam Williams, a notable Wichita marketing executive.
Lavonta Williams came in third place in the mayoral primary, but will be able to finish the two years she has left as Wichita’s District 1 City Council member.
In the primary race for the District 2, incumbent Pete Meitzner easily sat atop the field of three. He will face Jim Price, a construction defense contractor.
In District 5, KAKE-TV Marketing Director Bryan Frye will face Gary Bond, who works in marketing and sales for Top Master, a countertop company.
At 9.6 percent of registered voters, turnout was was up slightly from the 2011 mayoral primary, which saw a voter turnout of just 7.7 percent.
The general election will be held on April 7.
