2017 NEA Jazz Masters Special, Sutton & Clarke Birthdays, Last Rounds With Chick Corea

Monday 6.27.16

The National Endowment for the Arts has just announced the 2017 NEA Jazz Masters – an annual award recognizing some of the best living jazz musicians. The upcoming year’s honorees include singer Dee Dee Bridgewater, bassist Dave Holland, pianist Dick Hyman, and organist Dr. Lonnie Smith. This special edition of Night Train features music from all four artists – along with music from past NEA Jazz Masters including June featured artist Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Gary Burton, George Coleman, and Benny Golson.

Tuesday 6.28.16

Night Train marks birthdays of legendary composer Richard Rodgers (with performances of his compositions from new releases from Sarah Vaughan and Freddie Cole), keyboardist John Medeski (with Medeski, Martin and Wood), and singer Tierney Sutton (including a Song Travels special with Sutton as special guest in hour two of the show). Plus more from June featured artist Chick Corea – this time duetting with both vibist Gary Burton and with vocalist Bobby McFerrin.

Wednesday 6.29.16

Jazz has become an international language and Night Train offers some proof tonight by highlighting jazz pianists from around the world – including Japan’s Hiromi and Italy’s Stefano Bollani (both in duet settings with June featured artist Chick Corea) - and from Brazil – Antonio Adolfo, the Dominican Republic – Michel Camilo, Germany – Florian Hoefner, and Turkey – Fahir Atakoglu.

Thursday 6.30.16

Night Train wraps up the June Chick Corea feature with music he did with Stanley Clarke, whose birthday it is today. We’ll hear music they did in Return to Forever and as the Corea Clarke White lineup, along with a Corea/Clarke composition performed by Clarke, with Al DiMeola and Jean-Luc Ponty. Then in hour two, we end the June feature at the beginning, with a special devoted to Chick Corea’s emergence in the ‘60s working with Blue Mitchell, Stan Getz, Miles Davis and more.
