The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas will testify before a state legislative committee on Monday--against a bill designed to protect religious groups on public college campuses.
The House Federal and State Affairs Committee is having a hearing on Senate Bill 175on Monday.
The bill would keep state universities, community colleges and technical colleges from refusing to recognize or from denying campus resources to groups that won't let non-believers join their ranks.
It's a response to a U.S. Supreme Court decision in 2010, saying that universities can adopt anti-bias policies requiring groups accept anyone who wants to join.
The ACLU of Kansas Executive director Michah Kubic says "student organizations are free to believe and associate as they like...but, "the issue is whether student organizations have a right to be publicly funded to operate in a discriminatory manner. They should not."
Supporters say the bill protects groups' religious liberties.
