Monday, June 15

This time in the Global Village, we  ‘give the drummer some’ – with M’Boom - the all-percussion lineup led by Max Roach, Latin jazz percussion giant Mongo Santamaria, tabla master Tanmoy Bose, and world frame drum expert Glen Velez. Plus the Soul Brothers of South Africa, Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band, and Indian jazz fusion group, the Taal Tantra Experience.

Tuesday, June 16

Global Village celebrates birthdays of Femi Kuti (son of Afrobeat legend, Fela) and English folk rocker Iain Matthews – plus more global guitars, this time from Afro-rocker Justin Adams, and Norwegian blues and folk guitarist Knut Reiersrud with Henry Kaiser from a collection of music from Norway. There’s also new music from Poland’s Warsaw Afrobeat Orchestra, Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba, London reggae band the Skints, and Putumayo’s Celtic Café compilation.

Wednesday, June 17

Global Village explores the meeting of accordions and African music, with Nigerian accordion pioneer I.K. Dairo, the meeting of Congolese rhumba star Papa Noel and French accordionist Viviane A, and Tunisian oud player Anouar Brahem’s trio featuring the instrument. Plus more global guitars, including music this time from world-fusion guitarist Fareed Haque.

Thursday, June 18

Global Village highlights cumbia from one of Colombia’s most acclaimed ensembles, oud master Rabih Abou-Khalil with famed Italian folk-jazz accordionist Luciano Biondini, and some ‘blasts from the past’ from Mandrill, Sister Carol, African saxophonist Peter King , and ‘70s Iranian soul sitarist Abbas Mehrpouya.

  

Friday, June 19

Global Village continues the June Electric Guitar Month feature with a special birthday celebration for Jamaican guitar great Ernest Ranglin. The show features music from his solo projects, as well as work he did as lead guitarist and musical director for Jimmy Cliff, and as a guest artist with the Skatalites, Monty Alexander, the Melodians, Millie Small, Jackie Mittoo, and more.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
