Global Village kicks off the June Guitar feature with a program featuring a variety of global guitarists – including Santana, English folk great John Renbourn, African-fusion player Leni Stern, and some Latin Grammy-winning music from flamenco guitarist Tomatito with the legendary Paco de Lucia.
Tuesday, June 2
This time in the Global Village for the June Guitar Month Feature, it’s Ali Farka Toure: Roots and Branches - music from the legendary Malian guitarist from his classic Talking Timbuktu album with Ry Cooder, as well as selections from his cousin Khaira Arby (from her new album, Gossip), son and fellow guitarist Vieux Farka Toure, former band members (also guitarists) Afel Bocoum (performing with Bela Fleck) and Samba Toure, and finally (one degree removed), Issa Babayago, whose career was helped along by a former member of Toure’s band.
Wednesday, June 3
Global Village highlights two reissues of rare African recordings – the self-titled 1977 release from Ghanian Afrobeat pioneer Ebo Taylor and the third in a series of compilations from Benin’s Orchestre Poly-Rythmo with selections never before released outside Africa. Plus music from one of the classic ‘60s Prestige albums from Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers, some Hammond organ work from Steve Winwood and blasts from the past from James Brown and Richie Havens.
Thursday, June 4
Global Village celebrates the birthday of one of the stars of contemporary Latin music , Cuba-born, U.S.-based saxophone and clarinet player Paquito D’Rivera with music he did as a leader, including a new recording with the Spain-based Cuban classical group, Quinteto Cimarron, along with guest appearances with Andy Narell and the Caribbean Jazz Project. Plus more global guitars – this time from Fareed Haque - new music from Galician piper Cristina Pato, and California Irish punk from Flogging Molly.
