Last year, 1300 volunteers removed more than 2 tons of trash from the river as part of the annual trash roundup.

The City of Wichita is hosting the annual Arkansas River Trash Roundup on Saturday.

This is the 16th year that volunteers will get together to clean up trash and debris from along the Arkansas River.

David Nelson, area chairman of Ducks Unlimited, one of the event’s sponsors, spoke about the trash roundup at this week's city council meeting.

“Last year, 1300 people collected nearly two-and-a-half tons of trash from our river," he said. "It’s kind of amazing to think that there's actually two-and-a-half tons of trash in our river.”

The trash roundup falls on Earth Day, an annual event that began in the U.S. in 1970 to advocate for environmental protection. Earth Day has been observed worldwide since 1990.

Volunteer check-in for the trash roundup begins at 8 a.m. at 151 N. Waco. T-shirts are provided, and a free barbecue lunch will be served.
