An Artist's Perspective: Dear Sam

Curt Clonts

Dear Sam,

Like you, I am a proud Kansan. I have been married for 36 years and have three children with college degrees and children of their own. I vote. I served as a U.S. Marine for 8 years. Like you, I am a Catholic. And, though I do not fit the stereotype, I am an artist.

When I was young and my dad wanted me to really get his message, he would leave a letter on my dresser. One time it was: "Curt, you are hurting the people you love with your actions. You know as well as I do that your actions are not in keeping with being a good son and man. You CAN change, and you must, because at the end of the day all you have is your integrity and character---Love, Dad.”

Sam, when you sack education, you crush a solid future for our young. When you sack the arts, you erase what makes a state truly stand out. Forget money: I am speaking of mind, heart, and soul. Fully fund education. And allocate $250,000 so Kansas can meet its NEA arts funding requirement, which will allow artists to get the grant money they need.

Sam, you are hurting the people you love with your actions. You know as well as I do that your actions are not in keeping with being a good son and man. You CAN change, and you MUST, because at the end of the day all you have is your integrity and character.

Please.

Love, Curt
