August Feature- Guitarist Kenny Burrell + Ellingtonia And Standards

Night Train kicks off the August feature in honor of guitarist Kenny Burrell’s 85th birthday with music he and other artists did from one of Burrell’s favorite composers, Duke Ellington. Along with Burrell, there’s Ellington compositions from John Coltrane with Johnny Hartman, Red Mitchell with Roger Kellaway, Red Garland, Oscar Peterson, and the Jeff Hamilton Trio – and on new albums from Benny Golson, Sarah King & the Smoke Rings, Allen Toussaint, Dan Cray, and Lafayette Harris, Jr.

Tuesday 8.2.16

Night Train highlights music from guitar great Django Reinhardt and a wide array of ‘gypsy jazz’ artists he inspired. Along with classic recordings from the Hot Club of France and covers of Django compositions, the show highlights gypsy jazz inspired music from Federico Britos, Pearl Django, guitarist Martin Taylor’s Spirit of Django lineup, and Django’s Hot Club partner, violinist Stephane Grappelli.

Night Train highlights standards tonight – both classic recordings of these songs and new versions of old favorites. Among the artists featured, August featured artist Kenny Burrell (as a leader and as a guest with saxophonist Gene Ammons and soul jazz organ legend Jimmy Smith), Dinah Washington, Etta Jones and Art Blakey. Plus new releases (including standards) from Antonio Adolfo, Houston Person with Ron Carter, Michael Dease, and Hendrik Meurkens.

Thursday 8.4.16

Birthday salutes tonight on the Night Train to the legendary Louis Armstrong, guitarist Herb Ellis, and saxophonist Eric Alexander (including a special performance from the Savannah Music Festival featuring Alexander in hour two of the show). Plus more music from August featured artist, guitarist Kenny Burrell, and new music from the Great American Music Ensemble and One for All.
