It’s vibes and vocalists tonight on the Night Train with vibes players Gary Burton, Bobby Hutcherson, Milt Jackson, and Dave Samuels, and singers Curtis Stigers, Rene Marie and Abbey Lincoln – plus the double-Grammy winning album from Corea, Clarke & White, and sounds of the Crescent City from Ellis Marsalis, Johnny Adams, and Jelly Roll Morton.

  Tuesday 8.4.15

Night Train celebrates birthdays of the legendary Louis Armstrong (including a special in hour two of the show – Louis Armstrong’s New Orleans), guitarist Herb Ellis, saxophonist Eric Alexander, and drummer Jeff Hamilton. Plus more jazz flute for the August feature (from Charles Lloyd and Bud Shank) and new music from trombonist Steve Davis (a tribute to pioneering jazz trombonist J.J. Johnson), pianist Harold Mabern, and singer Mark Winkler.

Wednesday 8.5.15

Night Train continues the August jazz flute feature with music from the Reese Project’s salute to Herbie Mann, along with the Herbie Mann-Sam Most Quintet, Joe Farrell, Hubert Laws, and Mark Weinstein. Plus birthday celebrations for pioneering Brazilian percussionist Airto, guitarist Lenny Breau, and saxophonist Ricky Woodard  - and new music from Rachael Caswell, Dave Stryker, Eddie Henderson, and Mary Stallings.

Thursday 8.6.15

Night Train celebrates birthdays of vocalist Abbey Lincoln (including a Jazz Profiles special in hour two of the show), bassist Charlie Haden (with a new album, out tomorrow, of previously unreleased material with pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba), harpist Dorothy Ashby, and harmonica player Hendrik Meurkens. Plus new music from pianist Donald Vega (a tribute to Monty Alexander), saxophonist Steve Kaldestad, and the Susan Krebs Chamber Band.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
