Global Village pays a visit to Cuba in a variety of different ways – with music from pioneering Cuban bassist Cachao and from the groundbreaking Cuban band, Irakere; Bobby Sanabria’s Que Viva Harlem, a tribute to the birthplace of Latin jazz where Afro-Cuban and jazz influences first met; Jaro Milko’s mashup of Cuban and Balkan music; the Creole Choir of Cuba, a Cuban ensemble of Haitian descent; and Cuban born, Canadian based artists Hilario Duran and Alex Cuba.
Tuesday, August 4
This time in the Global Village it’s ‘bluegrass world’ – as the show highlights a number of groups and artists bringing bluegrass, Latin and other global influences together. Highlights include Brazilian bluegrass from Matuto, a Brazilian project from newgrass mandolinist Mike Marshall, Louisville’s Appalatin, and a meeting of Willie Nelson and Carlos Santana.
Wednesday, August 5
Global Village celebrates the birthday of Brazilian percussionist Airto with music he did as a leader, with the early Return to Forever lineup, and with wife Flora Purim. Plus music from August featured artist Jordi Savall, and new music from cellist Ophelie Gaillard, emerging Cape Verdean singer Elida Almeida, and critically acclaimed contemporary Mexican artist Lila Downs.
Thursday, August 6
Global Village celebrates Jamaican Independence Day with music from the island nation, including Bob Marley & the Wailers, solo projects from original Wailers Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh, ska from the Skatalites and associated artists, a rock steady hit from the Paragons, and conscious reggae classics from Culture and Burning Spear.
Friday, August 7
Each month, the Global Village New Month/New Music show features the best of new world music releases. Highlights this time include:
Ska and reggae sounds from both the Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra and Brown Rice Family
New takes on Brazilian music from Forro in the Dark, Nation Bea, and contemporary Brazilian underground bands on the new Amplificador compilation
Classic African sounds on the final album from the great Amadou Balake and the return of the pioneering Les Ambassadeurs
And the latest from the adventurous Russian band Ersatz Musika.
