Bassist Birthdays – Oscar Pettiford & Dave Holland, Coffee Day, Jane Bunnett Wrap Up & Oct Jazz Noir

Monday 9.29.14

Night Train marks birthdays of violinist Jean-Luc Ponty (with music he did with Frank Zappa and as a leader) and pianist David Kikoski (as part of the BeatleJazz lineup, and with Pat Martino). Plus more from September featured artist Jane Bunnett - and we team up with Global Village and Strange Currency to serve up some java jive for International Coffee Day.

Tuesday 9.30.14

Night Train marks the birthday of influential bassist Oscar Pettiford with music he did under his own name and working with Kenny Dorham – then in hour two of the show, a Jazz Profiles special tracing the career of this pioneering bebop bassist.  Also one last visit with September featured artist Jane Bunnett – this time from the In Dew Time and The Water Is Wide albums. And new music from the Bad Plus, organist Akiko, and singers Ranee Lee and Cyrille Aimee.

Wednesday 10.1.14

Night Train kicks off the October Jazz Noir feature – highlighting music of the post war era and contemporary recordings with a noir sound in conjunction with the Big Read’s selection this year of "The Maltese Falcon." It’s also the birthday of legendary bassist Dave Holland and there’s music from him in a variety of settings – including with his Quintet, with trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, and as part of the Gateway lineup with John Abercrombie and Jack DeJohnette- and then in hour two of the show, a special concert performance featuring Holland with piano great McCoy Tyner.

Global Village features the world music side of Dave Holland this evening as well.

Thursday 10.2.14

Night Train highlights a host of jazz organists tonight – from classic soul jazz players like Jimmy McGriff, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Shirley Scott to contemporary performers, including Mike LeDonne, Larry Goldings and Kansas City favorite Everette DeVan - all of whom have new releases.  Also new music from saxophonist Paul Carr, flutist Holly Hofmann, and pianist Chris Parker.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
