Bastille Day Jazz, July Artists Ahmad Jamal & Nina Simone, And Remembering Garrison Fewell

Monday 7.13.15

Night Train continues with more music from July featured artists Ahmad Jamal and Nina Simone; showcases new tribute albums from Cory Weeds (Jackie McLean), Jose James (Billie Holiday), Terrell Stafford (Lee Morgan), Charenee Wade (Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson) and Harry Allen (George Gershwin, Cole Porter & Duke Ellington); and marks the birthday of popular bassist Leroy Vinnegar – with music he did as a leader and with Sonny Rollins, Red Garland, Gerry Mulligan, Art Pepper, and Les McCann & Eddie Harris at Montreux.

Tuesday 7.14.15

Night Train celebrates Bastille Day with music from French jazz artists, jazz projects recorded in France and related recordings – including July featured artists Ahmad Jamal in Paris and Nina Simone doing a Jacques Brel classic - plus French trumpeter Erik Truffaz, pianist Jacky Terrasson, third stream artists Claude Bolling and Jacques Loussier, and music from Hot Club of France legends Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli.  Plus a birthday salute to cellist Akua Dixon with music she did as a leader, with Quartette Indigo, and with Steve Turre.

Wednesday 7.15.15

Night Train highlights singers tonight – including July featured artist Nina Simone, Louis Armstrong, Tierney Sutton, Andy Bey, Irene Reid and Nnenna Freelon. Plus a week-long remembrance of guitarist and jazz educator Garrison Fewell continues, and there’s new music from pianist Joey Calderazzo, organist Brian Charette, and trombonist John Fedchock, along with a rarity from the other July featured artist – Ahmad Jamal – an unusual setting with a 15-piece string orchestra on his 1959 release, At the Penthouse.

Thursday 7.16.15

Night Train explores some “new standards” from Yoron Israel, Curtis Stigers, Giacomo Gates and John Lester. Plus some different takes on Latin jazz with an Afro-Peruvian inspired piece from Denise Donatelli, and flamenco-jazz project from Greg Duncan. Plus a classic from Chet Baker and an old-fashioned tenor battle between Sonny Stitt and Paul Gonsalves.
