Best Of 2015, Bird Day & Lots Of Birthdays

Monday, January 4

Global Village kicks off a month-long feature of the Best Of 2015 including show favorites and other award-winners, nominees and significant world music releases from the past year. Show favorites this time include the recent album from Efran Lopez and Black Masala  - along with music from Anoushka Shankar’s Grammy-nominated world music album, Home. Plus birthday salutes to singer Clive Gregson and guitarist John McLaughlin.

Tuesday, January 5

Global Village celebrates National Bird Day with a show devoted to ‘bird songs’ – in this case songs about or inspired by our feathered friends from 2015 Global Village favorite Sinikka Langeland, along with Stevie Wonder, Karine Polwart, Bob Marley, Leonard Cohen, Youssou N’Dour, Martin Denny and more.

Wednesday, January 6

Global Village marks birthdays of Italian singer and composer Paolo Conte, and the late English folk-rock great Sandy Denny. Plus more of the Best Of 2015, the Global Village feature for January – including show favorites, Aziz Sahmaoui & University of Gnawa, Griselda Sanderson, and the Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra - and also music from Lura, one of the Transglobal World Music Chart picks for Best of 2015, and new music from the Gangbe Brass Band with special guest Femi Kuti.

Thursday, January 7

Some ‘unlikely reggae’ this time in the Global Village – with reggae-influenced music from other parts of the world, and reggae covers of unusual songs from the Warsaw Afrobeat Orchestra, the Wailing Souls, the Easy Star All Stars and more. Plus more of the Best Of 2015, the January Global Village feature, this time from Tiken Jah Fakoly and Vishten.

Friday, January 8

Global Village heads to Brazil for a wide array of styles of music - from the early choro style showcased on an album from Mike Marshall & Choro Famoso, to the Amazonian Brazilian sound of Mestre Cupijo, the contemporary Brazilian underground via the Friends from Rio Project, a big band frevo project by the Spok Frevo Orquestra, and a bossa nova classic from saxophonist Stan Getz.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
