Night Train highlights saxophone classics from John Coltrane, Gene Ammons and Sonny Rollins, Brazilian jazz from Flora Purim and Eliane Elias, and drummer leaders Joe Chambers, Leon Parker and Chris Parker.

Tuesday 9.20.16

Night Train marks birthdays of pianist Dan Cray (who has a new album out) and drummer and bandleader Chico Hamilton (with a special in hour two focusing on his new direction in the 60s and a new band that included then rising stars Charles Lloyd and Gabor Szabo). Plus more brass band sounds for the September feature – this time from the album just out from the March Fourth brass band – and some jazz concert previews for the coming week.

Wednesday 9.21.16

Night Train marks birthdays of jazz fusion guitar pioneer and local hero Jerry Hahn, Basie band saxophonist Frank Foster, and New Orleans blues and jazz pianist Henry Butler (including a special performance from Butler at the Savannah Music Festival in hour two of the show).  Plus new music from Three More Sounds tribute to McCoy Tyner and the swinging organ trio, Music Soup, from Athens, Greece.

Thursday 9.22.16

Night Train marks the arrival of autumn with a program devoted to both classic and contemporary songs about fall. Among the artists featured– Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane with Johnny Hartman, Bob Dorough, the Jacques Loussier Trio and the David Murray Quartet – along with autumn songs from new albums by Greg Murphy, the Organik Vibe Trio, Dave Stryker, and Saltman Knowles.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
