Global Village marks the birthday of zydeco legend Buckwheat Zydeco (Stanley Dural), who passed away in September, and of guitarist Derek Gripper; continues with more music from Haiti for the November feature, this time from the Haitian konpa band D.P. Express; highlights two very different accordion styles – from Spain’s Victor Prieto and Cape Verde’s Bitori; and showcases an African-inspired piece from Texas blues legend Johnny Copeland.

Global Village explores some classic and contemporary rock-influenced sounds from Asia, including selections from China’s Shanren, Rough Guide compilations from Vietnam and Cambodia, the Sound of Siam Vol. 2, Okinawa’s Shoukichi Kina, Vietnamese singer Huong Thanh, and the Pop Yeh Yeh compilation of ‘60s rock from Malaysia.

Traditional African music primarily focused on songs of praise, celebration, and special occasions, but in more recent times, artists have incorporated social and political messages in their music as well. This time in the Global Village, we explore some of that music, including Fela’s groundbreaking Afrobeat, African reggae artists Sonny Okosun, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Lucky Dube and Alpha Blondy, and South Africa's Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, and Lorraine Klaasen.

Global Village marks the birthdays of two artists who bring together jazz and world music – trombonist Roswell Rudd and bassist Ben Allison. Plus some Haitian jazz for the November feature from Haitiando and Mozayik and new music from contemporary cumbia band Money Chicha and kora player Dawda Jobarteh.

Global Village celebrates the birthdays of Cuban composer, guitarist, singer, and Buena Vista Social Club member Compay Segundo, and world-jazz trumpeter Don Cherry. Plus more Haitian music for the November feature, this time, from Boulpik and Zenglen, and the latest from La Banda Morisca, Mariza, and Etienne de la Sayette.
