Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency tonight to mark the birthday of Walt Disney with jazz versions of songs from Disney films performed by Dave Brubeck, Peggy Lee, The Jazz Networks, Esperanza Spalding and more. Plus birthday salutes to saxophonist Cory Weeds and pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, and new releases from Erroll Garner, Bill Evans, the Mike Jones Trio, and Dave Stryker.

Night Train marks birthdays of Great American Songbook lyricist Ira Gershwin (the brother of George) and also of legendary pianist Dave Brubeck tonight with classics from both and a special about Brubeck – Legacy of a Legend – in hour two of the show. Plus new music from singer and pianist Shirley Horn, singer and trumpeter Bria Skonberg, Phil Norman Tentet’s tribute to jazz classics, and Tony Foster’s tribute to Morricone and Mancini.

Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency tonight to celebrate the birthday of the unique voice and songwriter, Tom Waits. It’s also the birthday of one of the rising stars of the jazz organ, Pat Bianchi. And there are new releases from singers Allan Harris and Abbey Lincoln, organist Mike LeDonne with his Groover Quartet, and the lively ‘Sun-Ra-Meets-Crescent-City-Brass-Band’ group, the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble.

Thursday 12.8.16

Night Train marks the birthday of Jimmy Smith, the artist who made the Hammond B3 organ a lead instrument in jazz and helped craft the sound of soul jazz, with music from throughout his career and a Jazz Profiles special in hour two of the show. Plus new music from the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble, Diane Witherspoon, George Cables and Jane Bunnett & Maqueque.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
