It’s a coolsome twosome tonight on the Night Train with two of the best of the cool jazz singers, the November feature on the show. It’s the birthday of June Christy and Night Train will highlight music from her with the Stan Kenton Orchestra and on popular albums under her own name. The show also features music of Chet Baker, whose early recordings epitomized the male cool jazz vocal style. We’ll hear music from Baker, Baker tribute albums from Luciana Souza, John Proulx and June Bisantz, and in the second hour, a special with more music from Baker and a conversation with his biographer, James Gavin.
Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate the birthday Dr. John. The show focuses on the jazz side of the Crescent City legend, including albums he did in tribute to Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington, a guest appearance with Hank Crawford, and his work as part of the Bluesiana Triangle with David “Fathead” Newman and Art Blakey – plus a Dr. John Special in hour two of the show. Plus music from Coleman Hawkins for his birthday and the latest from singer Barbara Morrison, saxophonist Vincent Herring, and guitarist George Freeman.
Night Train marks the birthday of pianist, composer, singer and film star Hoagy Carmichael with songs from him and covers of his classics from Luciana Souza, Rahsaan Barber, and Brianna Thomas – plus a Jazz Profiles special about him in hour two of the show.
Night Train joins in with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate Thanksgiving with a menu packed with musical goodies all about food – from the turkey and sweet potatoes to a host of holiday desserts.
