Night Train steps aside tonight for two specials for Dr. King Day. In hour one, Night Lights highlights some of the many jazz classics inspired by Dr. King, including music from Oliver Nelson, Nina Simone, Blue Mitchell, Duke Ellington, Mary Lou Williams and Louis Armstrong. In hour two, a Blues and Beyond special highlights jazz and blues artists inspired by King and the Civil Rights movement, including Dr. Billy Taylor, Johnny & Shemekia Copeland, Eric Bibb, Lucky Peterson and Paul Robeson.

More of the Best of 2014 featured on tonight’s Night Train – including music from the Latin Side of Joe Henderson - nominated for two Grammys, and Night Train favorite George Cables. It’s also the birthday of two drummers – Jeff Tain Watts and the legendary Jimmy Cobb. Cobb is the last living member of the Kind of Blue sessions. In hour one, we’ll hear music from some of his latest projects and hour two it’s a special about the making of that classic album with Miles Davis.

Night Train continues with more of the January Best of 2014 feature – this time with show favorites Jacques Schwarz-Bart and Tierney Sutton; the Grammy-nominated L.A. Treasures album from the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra; salutes to Horace Silver and Joe Sample who passed away in 2014; and birthday celebrations for Crescent City guitarist Snooks Eaglin and pianist Jason Moran – including music from his Grammy-nominated contemporary tribute to Fats Waller.

Night Train marks birthdays of trombone great J.J. Johnson and bassist Eberhard Weber; continues with more of the January Best of 2014 feature – including show favorites from Omer Avital, Jessica Williams, and Chick Corea, and Grammy-nominees Arturo O’Farrill and Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band; and highlights new music from Robert Moore and Aaron Goldberg.
