Birthdays Of Les Paul & Chick Corea, Portugal Day And More Global Guitars

Monday, June 8

Guitarists from several different traditions are featured this time in the Global Village – Teta from Madagascar, Latin/Caribbean jazz fusion player Ray Obiedo, Mali’s BoubacarTraore, world jazz pioneer GaborSzabo, and Harry Manx, who brings together Indian music and the blues. Plus blasts from the past from the Grammy-winning Folksongs for a Nuclear Village album from Shadowfax, and from the classic Shoot Out the Lights album by Richard and Linda Thompson.

Tuesday, June 9

Today is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Les Paul and Global Village celebrates with some world-inspired recordings from the guitar and recording pioneer. It’s also the birthday of pianist Kenny Barron and Global Village highlights several of his Brazilian-inspired efforts (including one with guitarist John Scofield). Plus more world guitars for the June/Les Paul feature – including Cuban guitarist (and Buena Vista Social Club member) Manuel Galban and a new Latin-fusion set from guitarist Ray Obiedo.

Wednesday, June 10

Global Village celebrates Portugal Day with music from that and related countries – including music from Brazil to celebrate the birthday as well of bossa nova pioneer Joao Gilberto. There’s music from Cape Verde (a new album from Elida Almeida) and Angola (from Waldemar Bastos) and some great contemporary fado singers and Portuguese guitar players – including Mariza, Custódio Castelo and the award-winning Rodrigo Costa Félix.

Thursday, June 11

Global Village pays visits to several continents for more global guitars for the June feature.  Among the artists this time – Indian electric guitarist Prasanna; Indian slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya (with special guest, dobro master Jerry Douglas); Paraguayan classical guitarist Berta Rojas with Paquito D’Rivera; Malian guitar masters Baaba Maal and Mansour Seck; and German-born, African-jazz guitarist Leni Stern.

Friday, June 12

Global Village celebrates the birthday of pianist and composer Chick Corea by exploring the Spanish heart of some of his music – including a piece recorded in Spain from his most recent Trilogy release, a guest appearance with flamenco guitar great Paco de Lucia, music with Return to Forever, and a classic from his My Spanish Heart album. Plus more electric world guitars for the June feature, this time from the eclectic and progressive world jazz fusion guitarist Nguyen Le.
