Birthdays of Ron Carter And Arthur Blythe, World Accordion Day! And May’s Stevie Wonder Feature

Night Train celebrates the birthday of legendary bassist Ron Carter with music he did as a leader, and with Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Steve Kuhn, Chico Hamilton, the V.S.O.P. Quintet, and Bill Frisell.

Plus music from Stevie Wonder (including music from saxophonist Dave Pietro’s tribute album, Standard Wonder, and Brazilian pianist and singer Eliane Elias) and new releases from saxophonists Sax Gordon and Charles McPherson and pianist Dave Bass.

Tuesday 5.5.15

Night Train features the trombone on tonight’s show, with trombone innovator J.J. Johnson, Rob McConnell & the Boss Brass, and Steve Turre teamed him up with three trombones who worked in Art Blakey’s Messengers. There’s also music from the Messengers, Latin Grammy nominee Michel Camilo, ‘genius grant’ recipient Vijay Iyer, and singers Gretchen Parlato and Betty Carter.

Wednesday 5.6.15

Night Train celebrates World Accordion Day with music from some talented jazz accordionists – including Gil Goldstein, Richard Galliano, and Astor Piazzolla. Plus a birthday salute to German trumpeter, singer and composer Till Bronner, music of Stevie Wonder for the May feature, and new music from organist Tony Monaco, pianist Joe Alterman, singer Mary Stallings, and the Andrew Diruzza Quintet. Global Village also celebrates World Accordion Day tonight with a variety of global accordion players and styles.  

Thursday 5.7.15

Night Train marks birthdays of saxophonist and former World Saxophone Quartet member Arthur Blythe and percussionist Ramesh Shotham; continues the May Stevie Wonder feature with jazz covers of his songs from the Brad Goode Quinet, Bill Ware & Vibes, Gregoire Maret, and Stanley Turrentine; and highlights new music from organist Brian Charette, guitarist Dave Stryker, and bassists Nilson Matta and Marcus Miller.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
