Monday October 6

Music from Africa takes center stage this time in the Global Village – including music from Ethio-jazz creator Mulatu Astatke; Algerian rai star Khaled; Congolese rumba great Papa Wemba; and a selection from the classic Divas of Mali compilation. Plus some blasts from the past from War and Al DiMeola.

Tuesday October 7

Global Village celebrates the birthday acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma with music from his Brazilian and Silk Road project and the Hush album with Bobby McFerrin. Plus music from Haiti’s popular Tabou Combo for the October feature of music from Haiti, and new music from Bebel Gilberto, Kiran Ahluwalia, Grand Fatilla and the Psychedelic Planet compilation.

Wednesday October 8

This time in the Global Village, some African and reggae veterans who had another shot at recording later in life, including Jimmy Cliff from his 2012 Rebirth album, Clinton Fearon – a former member of the reggae group the Gladiators, Thiossane - an early member of Senegal’s acclaimed Orchestra Baobab, and Janka Naby from Sierra Leone.  Plus reissues that introduced Brazilian soul star Tim Maia, Nigerian musician Tunji Oyelana, and the ‘60s sound of Peruvian chicha to American audiences.

Thursday October 9

Birthday and holiday celebrations galore this time in the Global Village. Our birthday salutes include vibes player Dave Samuels; two giants of Cuban music, Chucho and Bebo Valdes, a father and son who also share a birthday; South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim; and world jazz pioneer Yusef Lateef. We also mark Ugandan Independence Day with music from internationally acclaimed artist and activist Geoffrey Oryema, and Leif Erikson Day with music from Robert Calvert’s Brian Eno-produced album, Lucky Leif and the Longships.

Friday October 10

Global Village highlights music from Haiti, the October show feature, this time music from a rare international Haitian release, a compilation from the Mini All Stars. Also birthday salutes to Latin percussionist Francisco Aquabella, pop songwriter and singer Kirsty MacColl, Cyril Neville of the Neville Brothers, and Headman Shabalala, one of the founding members of South Africa’s Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
