The 7th annual Art That Touches Your Heart event takes place Friday and Saturday on the Wichita State University campus. The event highlights black art and culture in Wichita and from around the globe.
Art dealer Danny Jenkins will display his diverse collection of African-American art, including works from internationally known sculptor Woodrow Nash.
Exhibition organizer Janice Thacker says Nash's life-size clay models are a must-see.
"What's interesting is everyone says, 'That looks like somebody I know, I can recognize that person,' but [Nash] extends it with bright and bold colors," she says.
Dallas-based artist Frank Frazier will also showcase his work, as will elementary students from around Wichita.
Also on display will be African artifacts collected by New Mexico-based Mohamed Sharif, formerly known as WSU Shocker basketball standout Kelly Pete.
In addition to art, the Wichita Black Educators Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be part of the event. This year's inductees include Betty Arnold, Jesse Faust, Leonard Wesley, Willa Crawford, Sam Mackey and Sam Spaght.
The black art show begins on Friday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m. at WSU's Rhatigan Student Center, 1st floor, with the induction ceremony held Friday at 6:45. The show continues Saturday from noon to 6 p.m.
