Mostly an American phenomenon, Phish spent the mid-1990s attempting to break into the European market. In 1997 the group played a series of shows in Amsterdam which found the quartet reaching for new musical heights. The shows are part of a new eight-CD boxed set simply titled Amsterdam. We’ll hear selections from that recording as well as from Joe Satriani’s 1989 release Flying In A Blue Dream.

Issued in 1987, Surfing With The Alien was a surprise hit from guitarist Joe Satriani. The album almost single-handedly renewed interest in instrumental guitar music. It was also Satriani’s celebration of the instrument as he intended to span the distance from Chuck Berry to Jeff Beck to Edward Van Halen and beyond across the album’s diverse range of compositions. We’ll hear selections from that release as well as from Jason Isbell’s new album Something More Than Free.

Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards is Joe Satriani’s 2010 album and a record that found the San Francisco-based guitarist seeking out a more band oriented approach to his music. With help from keyboardist Mike Keneally, Satriani achieves a sound that recalls classic era Jeff Beck. Listen for selections from that release as well as music from Led Zeppelin.

Joe Satriani has repeatedly made bold leaps from album to album in the 30 years since his recording debut and 1992’s The Extremist is no exception. Although it features many of Satriani’s signature guitar sounds on pieces such as “Summer Song” and “Friends” it offers more diverse pieces such as the acoustic-driven “Rubina’s Blue Sky Happiness.” We’ll hear selections from that recording as well as music from recently reissued albums by Led Zeppelin.

It’s our New Month, New Music feature with selections from the reissue of former Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters’ 1992 album Amused To Death and the latest releases from Joe Satriani, Samantha Crain, and a glimpse of an upcoming boxed set by the legendary Isley Brothers.

Shockwave Supernova is the latest recording from Joe Satriani and features the guitar master’s return to over-the-top playing on his instrument. Joined by the rhythm section of Marco Minnemann (drums) and Bryan Beller (bass) as well as keyboardist/guitarist Mike Keneally, Satriani delivers one of his greatest recordings to date. Listen for selections from that as well as from Tres Caballeros, the newest release from Minnemann and Beller’s trio The Aristocrats.

Released in 1979, In Through The Out Door became the final studio album from Led Zeppelin. Released the year before the death of drummer John Bonham, the record saw the band moving in a direction that was in tune with the music of the era, including the hit single “All My Love,” a song that guitarist Jimmy Page would later deem “a little soft” despite its chart success. Listen for music from the recently reissued version of the album as well as music from Plant’s 1982 solo debut Pictures At Eleven, featuring drumming legends Cozy Powell and Phil Collins.
