Blues legend Magic Sam kicks off month-long feature Friday on Crossroads

April 11/13 2014

This week at the Crossroads, we kick off our April feature of music from guitarist, singer, songwriter, and one of the pioneers of the West Side blues sound, Magic Sam.

We’ll also mark the birthday of Lowell George of Little Feat (the band is also featured on Strange Currency this entire month –we’ll highlight selections from the new 13-CD boxed set of the band’s complete Warner Bros. recordings) and of Cosimo Matassa, whose studio was birthplace to many of the hits that came from the Crescent City’s Golden Age of R&B.

And there’s new music from the Robert Cray Band and compilations featuring Johnny Winter, Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
