Bollywood's R.D. Berman, Congolese Greats, Word Music Stars & New Month/New Music Time

Monday, June 27

Global Village marks the birthday of one of the great Bollywood music directors, R.D. Burman, who revolutionized the music in Indian films with his adventurous use of rock, Latin, Arabic and other influences. We also continue our June Silk Road feature with music from another Silk Road Ensemble member, Galician bagpiper Cristina Pato; feature music from bassist Dave Holland – who was just named as an NEA Jazz Master for 2017; and highlight new music from Spanish Afrobeat band, the Alma Afrobeat Ensemble and the Cocek! Brass Band.

Tuesday, June 28

Global Village highlights some ‘world music stars’ – performers who have achieved wider popular success and recognition. Among the artists featured are world music pioneers Bob Marley (with a cover of one of his songs from Rebel Tumbao) and Ravi Shankar, the Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz, Afrobeat legend Fela, new tango creator Astor Piazzolla (as performed by Russia’s Trio Voronezh), the award-winning singer Angelique Kidjo , and acclaimed South African vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Wednesday, June 29

It’s world violins this time in the Global Village – including music from Indian violinist L. Subramaniam,  Latin jazz violinist Federico Britos, Swedish fiddle from the group Vasen, and Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem, from the Souvenance album, his first project with string orchestra. Plus some world jazz sounds from Spanish singer Buika with guitarist Pat Metheny, and Latin jazz star Paquito D’Rivera from his Grammy and Latin Grammy winning album, Song for Maura.

Thursday, June 30

Global Village celebrates Independence Day of the Democratic Republic of Congo with music from some of the many great artists and bands that have come from that country. Highlights include music from soukous giants Franco and Tabu Ley Rochereau, the all-star lineups of the Four Stars and Kekele, one of the great female stars of Congolese music M'Bilia Bel, the father of Congolese Rumba WendoKolosoy, and two contemporary bands that harken back to the classic Congolese rumba sound, Black Bazar and Mbongwana Star.

Friday, July 1

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of new world music releases.  Among the highlights this time:

Legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen with an all-star cast of Haitian musicians performing as the Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra

The first new international release in over a decade from Guinean saxophonist Mamadou Barry

New reggae sounds from both Quantic and Jah Works

Another in a series of reissues of classic albums from English folk legend Bert Jansch

The companion CD to the documentary Song of Lahore

And the new album from July featured artist Santana, Santana IV, reuniting the classic Woodstock era band.
