Brass Bands & Birthdays Of George Gershwin, Bud Powell, Matt Wilson & More

Monday 9.26.16

Night Train marks birthdays of one of the greats of the Great American Songbook, George Gershwin (including a Gershwin Songbook special in hour two of the show), ‘cool singer’ Julie London, guitarist Vic Juris, and trumpeter Nicholas Payton. Plus NO BS Brass do a tribute to Charles Mingus, and Houston Person & Ron Carter do a song on their new album written by Ira Gershwin with Kurt Weill.

Tuesday 9.27.16

More brass band sounds for the September feature tonight on the Night Train, including music from the New Orleans All Star Stompers with Nicholas Payton, and Dr. Michael White, a key figure in the traditional brass band scene in New Orleans. Plus birthday salutes to bop piano legend Bud Powell, trumpeter Red Rodney, drummer and WSU alum Matt Wilson, and cornetist Peter Ecklund – and John Scofield’s new album, Country for Old Men, with his new jazz covers of classic country songs.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
