Canada Day, Congo Day & New Month/New Music Time

Monday, June 29

Global Village highlights some rockin’ accordion – including music from Brave Combo, Tom Waits, and conjunto legend Flaco Jimenez with both the Texas Tornados and Ry Cooder. Plus contemporary classical ensemble Kronos Quartet, roots reggae favorites Third World, Germany’s Bahama Soul Club, and Nigeria’s Beautiful Nubia & the Roots Renaissance Band.

  Tuesday, June 30

Global Village celebrates Independence Day of the Democratic Republic of Congo with music from some of the many great artists and bands that have come from that country. Highlights include music from soukous giants Franco and Tabu Ley Rochereau, the all-star lineups of the Four Stars and Kekele, one of the great female stars of Congolese music M’Bilia Bel, the father of Congolese Rumba Wendo Kolosoy, and two contemporary bands that harken back to the classic Congolese rumba sound, Black Bazar and Mbongwana Star.

Wednesday, July 1

Global Village celebrates Canada Day with a special show devoted to some of the many talented world music artists who call Canada home. Among the artists featured are Ensemble Polaris, Jayme Stone, Danny Michel, Lorraine Klaasen, Kiran Ahluwalia, Souljazz Orchestra, Dubmatix and more, who incorporate Latin, Indian, African, Caribbean and other styles into  their  music.

Global Village explores a variety of African sounds, including music from the 2012 Festival in the Desert, one the rising stars of African music – Vieux Farka Toure (son of the great Ali Farka Toure),  highlife master Chief Stephen Osadebe, Afroreggae pioneer Sonny Okosons, and Nigerian juju great,  I.K. Dairo.

Each month, the Global Village New Month/New Music show features the best of new world music releases.  Highlights this time include:

An adventurous new jazz and strings infused project from singer Gino Sitson
A self-titled debut from the eclectic, multi-instrumental world trio, Bolo
Pan-American sounds from both Chile’s Chico Trujillo and Miami-based Cuban band, TiempoLibre
The latest from July featured band, Ireland’s Kila
And newly reissued rarities from Guinean singer and percussionist AmaraToure.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
