Celebrating the Arrival of Summer, the Festival of the Sun & Madagascar’s Independence Day

Monday June 23

SUMMER SPECIAL: Global Village welcomes in the new season with songs of summer from Bob Marley & the Wailers, Desmond Dekker, Ray Barretto, Bill Withers, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Michael Franti & Spearhead and more.

Tuesday  June 24

Global Village marks the Festival of the Sun, an Incan festival which traces its roots back centuries and is celebrated to this day, with music from the countries that were once part of the Incan empire – including Peru, Chile, and Boliva. Plus more music from June featured artist Ernest Ranglin, Delicious Peace – this year’s  Independent Music Award winner for World Music Traditional Album, and new music from Toumani & Sidiki Diabate and Let’s Boogaloo Vol. 6.

Wednesday June 25

It’s a potpourri of sounds from around the globe this time in the Global Village, including music from Paul Simon’s Graceland, the exotica of the Arthur Lyman Group, Okinawa’s Shoukichi Kina, Monty Alexander’s Caribbean Ivory & Steel project, and some Balkan sounds by way of Montreal from Briga.

Thursday June 26

Global Village celebrates Madagascar’s Independence Day with music from several prominent artists and groups from the island nation, including Tarika and D’Gary. Plus new music from guitarist Fareed Haque, Jazz Journalist Association Award Winner Pedrito Martinez, and June featured artist Ernest Ranglin.

Friday June 27

Global Village travels the globe for music from Nigeria (Lijadu Sisters), Poland (Bester Quartet), Mali (Fatoumata Diawara), and England (the “London’s Calling” compilation) – plus Latin soul from two great percussionists – Ray Barretto and Mongo Santamaria,  and the classic “Talking Timbuktu” album from Ali Farka Toure with Ry Cooder.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
