Some tough tenors on tap tonight on the Night Train, including tenor saxophonists Sonny Rollins, Ernie Watts, Anton Schwartz, Stan Getz, Coleman Hawkins with Ben Webster, and John Coltrane with Duke Ellington – as Night Train joins in with all the music shows on KMUW this month to feature the saxophone for the bicentennial birthday of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the instrument. Also new music from Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood, Tierney Sutton, Elio Villafranca and the Ezra Weiss Sextet.

Night Train celebrates the birthday of legendary Latin percussionist Patato with music he did as a guest with guitarist Grant Green. And throughout the month Night Train celebrates the 200th birthday of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone, with great saxophone artists and recordings. Tonight it’s new music from Kansas jazz saxophonist and educator Chris Greco, and in hour two of the show, part one of a two part John Coltrane Jazz Profiles special.

Night Train celebrates the birthday of Argentine trumpeter Diego Urcola, and continues the November saxophone feature with music from acclaimed baritone player Gary Smulyan and the latest from alto saxophonist Oliver Lake with his Organ Quartet. Then in hour two of the show, it’s part two of a John Coltrane Jazz Profiles special.

Special: Night Train marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Adolphe Sax tonight in a special show devoted to a wide range of both classic and new jazz saxophone recordings. Highlights include music from legends like Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Hank Crawford, and John Coltrane, contemporary players like Kenny Garrett and David Sanborn, and new releases from Adam Schroeder, the Cookers with Billy Harper, and Conrad Herwig in a tribute to Joe Henderson.
