Celebrating Jeff, Jerry And Some Lost Treasures

Friday, June 24

We celebrate the birthday of guitar legend Jeff Beck on this episode of the show, drawing on his early work with The Yardbirds as well as selections from his upcoming release Loud Hailer. Beck’s music will be featured on Strange Currency throughout the month of July. 

Saturday, June 25

Jerry Garcia had many fruitful collaborations in his career outside the Grateful Dead, including his work with keyboardist Merl Saunders. A new archival release spotlights the improvisational highs the pair found on the stage. Recording in July 1973, it’s the sound of Garcia at an early peak and Saunders playing as effortlessly as ever. We’ll hear selections from that recording and various selections from the Grateful Dead catalog.

Monday, June 27

In 1993, The Cure released two live recordings, Show and Paris. The former focused on the group’s more recent material while the later leaned heavily on earlier (and frequently darker) material. We’ll hear selections from Paris on this episode of the show as well as selections from No Quarter, the 1994 set from Robert Plant and Jimmy Page featuring former Cure guitarist Porl (now Pearl) Thompson.

Tuesday, June 28

We’ll remember bluegrass pioneer and American music legend Dr. Ralph Stanley, who passed away last week at the age of 89 as well as funk legend Bernie Worrell who died last Friday at the age of 72. Worrell is known for his work with Parliament, Funkadelic and Talking Heads. 

Wednesday, June 29

Germany’s Dark Suns has just released the double album Everchild, a record that blends elements of classic progressive rock (King Crimson) with European-flavored jazz and various other elements. We’ll hear selections from that release on this episode of the show as well as selections from The Cure’s Three Imaginary Boys LP.

Thursday, June 30

In 1986 , Sonic Youth was tapped to score Ken Friedman’s film Made In The U.S.A.. In preparation the New York-based outfit retreated to a studio called Spinhead for rehearsals and taped those sessions. Now, 30 years later, that music has been released as the Spinhead Sessions. We’ll hear selections from that recording as well as Atomic, the latest by Scotland’s Mogwai.
