Celebrating Labor Day, Kicking Off The Sept. Brass Bands Feature & Brazilian Jazz

Night Train celebrates Labor Day with some work songs and a ‘Jazz on the Picket Lines’ special in hour two of the show. Plus the kick-off of the September Brass Bands feature with music from Kermit Ruffins with both the Rebirth Brass Band and the Treme Brass Band, and new music from Charlie Hunter and Jim Rotondi.

Night Train marks birthdays of popular British jazz vocalist Claire Martin and singer Macy Gray (with music from her new album with an all-star cast of jazz artists); highlights new music from Nels Cline, Gregory Porter, and Chico Freeman; and kicks of the September Brass Band feature with music from the Rebirth Brass Band and a brass bands special in hour two with special guests Matt Sakakeeny (professor and author of Roll With It, about the brass bands of New Orleans) and also the Rebirth Brass Band.

Night Train marks birthdays of saxophone colossus Sonny Rollins, pianist Bruce Barth and bassist Clark Sommers – and celebrates Brazilian Independence Day with some Brazilian jazz, including music from the latest album from pianist, composer and arranger Antonio Adolfo, and in hour two, a Savannah Music Festival Brazilian Duets special with the late Toots Thielemans, Brazilian mandolinist Hamilton de Holanda, guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves and more.

Thursday 9.8.16

Night Train spends some time tonight in the Crescent City. There’s more brass band music for the September feature, including the 35th anniversary album from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, along with music from New Orleans’ artists Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison, Dr. John, the Marsalis Family, Allen Toussaint, Louis Armstrong and more – plus new releases from Kenny Garrett, the Yellowjackets, Cyrus Chestnut, Peter Bernstein and more.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
