Celebrating The Lunar New Year & Mardi Gras, Visiting Morocco & Remembering Otis Clay

Monday, February 8

Happy New Year! We celebrate Chinese New Year, Tet (Vietnam), Seollal (Korea), Losar (Tibet) or the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival in this visit to the Global Village. We’ll highlight traditional (Heart of the Dragon Ensemble), world fusion (Gao Hong and Yo-Yo Ma & the Silk Road Ensemble) and contemporary pop (Sa Dingding) from China.

Plus we feature music from Taiwanese neo-folk ensemble, A Moving Sound, Tibetan artist Yungchen Lhamo, Vietnamese pop singer Carol Kim,  the adventurous world-jazz duo of Huong Thanh and  Nguyen Le, and more to celebrate the holiday.

Tuesday, February 9

It’s carnival time in the Global Village! To celebrate Fat Tuesday, Global Village heads to the carnival hot spots of Brazil for some samba, Trinidad for calypso and steel drum music, and the Crescent City for the Mardi Gras Indian group Wild Tchoupitoulas. Plus New Orleans favorites Professor Longhair, the Hawketts and more.

Wednesday, February 10

Global Village marks the birthday of Brazilian composer, arranger, pianist and educator Antonio Adolfo; continues with more music from Bob Marley and the UK roots reggae group Black Slate for the February feature; and highlights new music from Germany’s Shantel, contemporary Peruvian cumbia band Bareto, and the Gregorio Uribe Big Band.

Thursday, February 11

Global Village remembers Otis Clay on his birthday, with music spanning the long career of the talented soul and gospel singer and Blues Hall of Fame inductee who passed away last month. Plus more roots reggae for the February feature – this time from South Africa’s Lucky Dube – and new music from Sweet Honey in the Rock, and Shye Ben Tzur with Radiohead’s Johnny Greenwood and the Rajasthan Express.

Friday, February 12

Global Village pays a visit to Morocco, with music from the traditional to the contemporary. Among the highlights are recent releases and Global Village Best of 2015 picks from Aziz Sahmaoui, and Titi Robin with Medhi Nassouli, jazz artists Randy Weston and 2016 NEA Jazz Master Archie Shepp in Gnawa-inspired projects, internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Hassan Hakmoun and more.
