SPECIAL: Global Village celebrates the start of Hispanic Heritage Month with a program devoted entirely to the wide range of Latin sounds and artists that have helped shape American music. Latin jazz, soul and rock are all featured, including some of the legends of the music, among them Machito, Mongo Santamaria, Los Lobos and Santana, along with rare sides from Joe King Carrasco, Flash & the Dynamics and more.
Tuesday September 16
SPECIAL: Global Village celebrates Mexican Independence Day with music from Mexico – touching on a variety of regional styles, music from the traditional to the contemporary, and also selections from some American artists of Mexican descent. Among the artists featured are Café Tacuba, Maldita Vecindad, Lila Downs, Sones de Mexico and Esquivel.
Wednesday September 17
Songs with a social conscience this time in the Global Village with music from Fela, Mali’s Oumou Sangare, Pete Seeger, Bruce Cockburn from a collection of Pete Seeger songs, Playing for Change 3, the reunited ‘70s UK reggae band Black Slate - and for the September Fania feature, the groundbreaking Siembra album from Willie Colon and Ruben Blades that introduced a new social consciousness into the music of the label and contemporary Latin music.
Thursday September 18
Global Village celebrates the birthdays of Brazilian-born, US based pianist, composer and educator Jovino Santos Neto, and Algerian-born, French-based singer and activist Rachid Taha. Plus more music from Fania, marking the 50th anniversary of the label and celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month throughout September, this time with music from Bobby Valentin, Ray Barretto and Tito Puente.
Friday September 19
Global Village celebrates the birthday of adventurous guitarist, composer, and musical explorer Henry Kaiser with music from projects he did with David Lindley and musicians from both Norway and Madagascar, and from the French, Frith, Kaiser, Thompson project.
Plus more music from Fania Records for the September feature – this time from the label’s most successful act, the Fania All Stars, teamed up with African saxophone legend Manu Dibango for a lively version of Dibango’s big hit, “Soul Makossa,” and a hit from boogaloo star Joe Cuba.
Also new music from Brooklyn Afrobeat band Zongo Junction, Hungary’s Sondorgo, and the Rough Guide to Psychedelic Cambodia.
