The City of Wichita will be expanding its bike lanes this year linking the southern part of the city with downtown. The lanes will be on Topeka and Market streets, between Kellogg and Mount Vernon.
The city plans to spend $300,000 constructing the new bike lanes. Scott Wadle, the senior planner for the Bicycle and Pedestrian advisory board, said the construction is part of the 10-year Wichita Bicycle Master Plan. He says the new lanes will connect existing bike paths downtown with another set that runs east to west along Mount Vernon.
“It will help to make that connection and to open up more transportation options for folks living in the south-central neighborhood,” Wadle says.
Wadle says the city planned to develop a network of 150 miles of bike paths beginning in 2013. Since then, roughly 28 miles have been completed. He says an additional five miles are set to be added this year.
