Wichita officials say a city website was hacked over the weekend.
The crime possibly compromised the financial information of current or former employees who have been reimbursed for expenses since 1997, as well as vendors that have done business with the city.
The hackers may have stolen social security numbers, taxpayer identification numbers, and banking information.
As many as 29,000 vendors and employees may be affected.
The security breach has been corrected and the city is in the process of notifying those affected.
The city is asking all vendors who have established direct deposit business accounts and employees who have received reimbursements to check with their banking institutions.
They also recommend visiting the credit agencies like TransUnion, Equifax and Experian for free fraud-alert services.
If a vendor or employee determines their information has been used illegally, they should report the crime to the Wichita Police Department at 316-268-4221.
