City Winds Down Response To Winter Holiday Weather

City of Wichita

Wichita Public Works & Utilities crews are winding down their response to winter weather over the Thanksgiving holiday.

According to a release from the city, crews began applying salt-sand mix to bridges and highly trafficked city streets on Thanksgiving Day. Large-scale response operations continued into Monday morning. Approximately 160 personnel devoted their time to what the city described as a highly successful effort.

Now that the storm has passed, the city’s focus has shifted to repairing potholes. Precipitation events, like the storm this weekend, give rise to potholes on city streets. Each year, an average of 50,000 potholes are patched in Wichita. Earlier this year, the city purchased a $174,000 machine that it says is capable of more permanent repairs to existing potholes.

Given the expectation of wet pavement conditions and subfreezing temperatures, the city says responders will be monitoring for icing overnight Monday into Tuesday.
