Classical & Classic Jazz, Guitars, Tribute Albums & West Coast Jazz

Monday 9.25.17

Great guitars and tribute albums are featured tonight on the Night Train, including music from Pat Metheny, John Scofield’s collaboration with saxophonist Eddie Harris, guitar legend Wes Montgomery, Eric Clapton with Wynton Marsalis, and the Deep Blue Organ Trio with guitarist Bobby Broom. Plus Swingadelic’s salute to Duke Pearson, Dee Dee Bridgewater’s tribute to Billie Holiday, Bill Frisell’s collection of songs from John Lennon, Alan Pasqua doing music of Bill Evans, and Conrad Herwig showcasing the “Latin Side of Herbie Hancock.”

Tuesday 9.26.17

Night Train heads to the West Coast for some classic and contemporary sounds from that part of the country. Among the artists featured – Charles Brown, Art Pepper, the L.A. Treasure Project, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Chico Hamilton and Chet Baker.

Wednesday 9.27.17

Night Train highlights jazz legends and classic recordings tonight – including music from Ella Fitzgerald, Bill Evans, John Coltrane (with Thelonious Monk and from A Love Supreme), tenor sax legend Coleman Hawkins, Erroll Garner’s classic Concert by the Sea album, legendary bassist Ron Carter, and the Montgomery Brothers (Wes, Buddy, and Monk).

Thursday 9.28.17

Night Train wraps up the September Classical Music Month/Jazz Meets Classical feature with a program featuring jazz reinterpretations of classical compositions. We’ll highlight works from Bach, Borodin, Mussagorsky, Ravel and more, reimagined by Jacques Loussier, Dave Brubeck, Eddie Daniels, Jim Hall, Tessa Souter and more.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
