Concert For Bangladesh Anniversary, Birthday Of Reggae Star Lucky Dube And New Month/New Music

Monday, August 1

Global Village marks the 45th anniversary of the Concert for Bangladesh, which took place on August 1, 1971 in Madison Square Garden.  The groundbreaking event was the first and a template for the many benefit concerts that followed to aid a variety of humanitarian efforts. Global Village features music from the Concert from the two key artists who helped put the event together - George Harrison and Ravi Shankar – along with music from other artists who performed there.

Tuesday, August 2

Global Village highlights some African blues in this visit – including those of guitar greats Ali Farka Toure and Djelimady Tounkara, the ‘desert blues’ of Bombino and Imarhan, blues harmonica player JeConte with the Mali All Stars, and the latest from Leni Stern and the Soul of John Black.

Wednesday, August 3

Global Village remembers South African reggae star Lucky Dube on his birthday. Plus music from August featured artist, the legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen from his Secret Agent album along with music from Fela’s son, Seun Kuti - and new releases from Bill Laurance of Snarky Puppy, Tuareg guitarist Bombino and the spin-off group 2016: Afro Celt Sound System.

Thursday, August 4

Global Village highlights some ‘girl groups’ this time around – the rather rare offering in world music of groups featuring all-female lineups. We’ll hear Zap Mama, Angelique Kidjo (from her album Eve, dedicated to the women of Africa and featuring a number of female choirs), the Silly Sisters, the Roches, and from South Africa – the Mahotella Queens and the 12 Apostles Church Choir.

Friday, August 5

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of new world music releases. Among the highlights this time:

August featured artist Tony Allen’s new project with the Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra

Miami’s hip Latin Soul & Jazz band Palo!

A best-of set from the nova bossa nova band, Bossacucanova

A Studio One rarity, Money Maker, with legendary reggae studio players including the great Ernest Ranglin

Another reissue from Ethiopia’s Hailu Mergia and the new Rough Guide to Ethiopian Jazz

And two great spin-off bands – Money Chicha and the Bacao Rhythm and Steel Band.
