Cryptosporidiosis Reported In Johnson County

Flickr Creative Commons

Johnson County health officials are trying to stop the spread of a water-borne disease caused by a microscopic germ.

At least three cases of Cryptosporidiosis have been confirmed in Johnson County.

The disease causes diarrhea and other intestinal symptoms. It can be spread through pool water, because it's resistant to chlorine.

The City of Overland Park has closed a privately-owned swimming pool. The City of Shawnee has performed so-called "shock treatment" of a city-owned pool. The Johnson County Health Department says all city pools in Shawnee are safe to swim in.

Crypto can still be spread two weeks after symptoms end. That's why anyone who has had diarrhea should avoid swimming for at least two weeks after their symptoms have stopped.

Hand sanitizers do not kill crypto, so health officials say careful handwashing with soap and water is especially important.
