Sedgwickcounty.org

Hopefuls who want to run for a seat on the Wichita City Council or Wichita School Board have until noon Thursday to file. A few of this fall’s races are already shaping up.

Three seats are up for election on the city council: In District 1, activist Brandon Johnson, businessman Mike Kinard, transit board member Janet Wilson and Pachyderm Club President John Stevens have filed so far. Councilwoman Lavonta Williams' final term ends this year.

In District 6, Sybil Strum and park board president Cindy Claycomb are running for the seat held by Vice Mayor Janet Miller, who is also term limited.

District 3 Councilman James Clendenin is running for re-election against William Stofer.

On the Wichita School Board, four seats are open:

District 1

  • Betty Arnold (inc.)
  • Ben Blankley

District 2

  • Julie Hedrick
  • Trish Hileman
  • Debra Washington

District 5

  • Peter V. Grant
  • Mike Rodee (inc.)

District 6

  • Shirley A. Jefferson
  • Ron Rosales
  • Walt Chappell

Joy Eakins and Lynn Rogers are not seeking re-election. Their terms end in January.

The primary election will be held on August 1. This is the first year that local elections will be held in the fall instead of the spring.

This post has been updated to reflect the candidate filings after the June 1 deadline.
