When guitarist Jack Rose died in 2009 at the age of 38 of an apparent heart attack, he left behind a small but impressive body of work. Working in a style of acoustic guitar known as American primitivism, Rose drew on a wide range of influences that included Indian raga music, blues, country and even the avant garde. We’ll hear selections from several of Rose’s major releases, which are now being reissued. Also listen for music from Thalia Zedek’s latest, Eve.

Best known for his work with the band Spain, Josh Haden has recorded a few solo releases in his career, including 2007’s Devoted an album Haden has said was inspired by R&B artist Keith Sweat. We’ll hear selections from it as well as music from Day Breaks, the latest effort by Norah Jones, which finds the singer-songwriter returning to the piano-based sounds of her earliest recordings.
Friday, October 21
Solas is the latest release from Northern Ireland’s The Answer. Informed by classic and blues-rock sounds, the group delivers a batch of uplifting songs influenced by contemporary music while losing none of the band’s established sound. Listen for selections from that recording as well as music by Jane’s Addiction.
Saturday, October 22
We’ll hear selections from High Bias, the latest release from Purling Hiss as well as music from Tycho’s latest, Epoch.
Monday, October 24
Best known for his work with The Police, Stewart Copeland was tapped to compose the score to the 1983 film Rumble Fish. The acclaimed soundtrack included the single “Don’t Box Me In,” a collaboration between Copeland and onetime Wall of Voodoo member Stan Ridgway. We’ll hear selections from this soundtrack as well as selections from The Wild Life, the 1984 Cameron Crowe-directed film featuring a score from Edward Van Halen.
