Dig In Deep And Wait For Summertime

Tuesday, March 1

Changes is the brand-new release from acclaimed vocalist Charles Bradley. The title track is a cover of a poignant track from Black Sabbath’s Vol. 4 but Bradley makes the tune all his own. We’ll hear selections from that release on this episode of the show as well as music from the latest release by Mavis Staples.

Wednesday, March 2

Dig In Deep is the new album from Bonnie Raitt and features some of her best material in recent years. Backed by a band of veteran musicians that includes keyboardist Mike Finnigan and bassist James “Hutch” Hutchinson, Raitt also delivers some of the best original material of her career. We’ll hear music from that release as well as selections from Muddy Waters’ Father and Sons album which features March featured artist Paul Butterfield.

Thursday, March 3

Jimmie Vaughan and his younger brother Stevie Ray didn’t make a lot of music together but their 1990 album, Family Style, released roughly one month after the death of Stevie Ray, was a massive success, not just because of the hit single “Tick Tock”, but because it captured the spirit of two great guitarists. We’ll hear selections from that release on this episode of the show as well as music from Jimmie Vaughan’s Strange Pleasure LP.

Friday, March 4

It’s our New Month, New Music feature: Some may know Sarah Neufeld best from her work with Arcade Fire but she’s also established herself as a unique voice via a series of albums outside that band, including her latest solo outing, The Ridge. Touching on elements of the minimalist and avant garde music she heard in her formative years, it’s also Neufeld’s most commercially accessible record to date. We’ll hear selections from it on this episode of the show as well as music from Willie Nelson’s new collection of Gershwin tunes, Summertime

Saturday, March 5

Released in 1966, Paul Butterfield Blues Band’s East-West is not only an early example of jazz fusion but an excellent example of the cross-cultural music that was beginning to bud in the wake of psychedelia. We’ll hear selections from this release as well as music from the Carlos Santana/John McLaughlin collaboration Love Devotion Surrender.

Monday, March 7

After nearly a decade of recording acclaimed but under-selling albums, The Fabulous Thunderbirds unleashed the highly commercial record Tuff Enuff. With it, the band earned its only Top 40 hit, a song that was featured in several films and frequently appeared in episodes of various television shows. Tuff Enuff was produced by Dave Edmunds and we’ll hear not only from that album, but from Edmunds’ 1978 release Tracks On Wax 4

Tuesday, March 8

Produced by legendary Memphis musician Jim Dickinson, John Hiatt’s 2005 LP Master Of Disaster features Dickinson’s sons Luther and Cody as part of Hiatt’s backing band, along with storied session musician David Hood. We’ll hear selections from it as well as Slim Dunlap’s 1996 release, Times Like This.
